This week, Crime Stoppers ACT was proud to join the University of Canberra’s O‑Week celebrations as part of the national Anti‑Money  Laundering (AML) campaign now underway across Australia. The event attracted strong attendance from new and returning students, with particular interest from international students who are often targeted by organised crime groups seeking to recruit “money mules”.

Our team spoke with hundreds of students throughout the day, highlighting how criminals use job scams, social media approaches and deceptive financial offers to lure young people into illegal activity. Many students were surprised to learn how quickly these situations can escalate, and how serious the consequences can be.

The engagement was designed to give students clear, practical information about recognising warning signs, protecting themselves, and reporting suspicious behaviour safely and anonymously. It was a great opportunity to explain the role of Crime Stoppers and how easy it is for them to report what they know.

This O‑Week activation is one of several community engagement activities Crime Stoppers ACT is delivering as part of the national AML campaign. By connecting directly with students at the start of semester, we’re helping to build awareness, strengthen prevention, and ensure young people feel confident seeking help if something doesn’t seem right.
