Crime Stoppers ACT will join a record national partnership between Crime Stoppers Australia and the Shopping Centre Council of Australia (SCCA), with a community pop-up at Canberra Centre today, Tuesday 22 September, to help Canberrans learn more about reporting suspicious behaviour safely and anonymously.
The national campaign has expanded by more than 30 per cent in its second year, with Crime Stoppers messaging now appearing in more than 320 shopping centres and on over 4,500 digital screens across Australia.
The campaign encourages people to “See something suspicious? Tell us anonymously”, prompting shoppers and retailers to share information that may help prevent or solve crime.
Last year’s inaugural campaign saw Crime Stoppers contacts increase by 17 to 50 per cent in some jurisdictions, reinforcing the value of keeping Crime Stoppers visible in busy public spaces.
Crime Stoppers ACT Chair Oliver Forrester said the Canberra Centre pop-up is an opportunity to connect directly with the local community.
“Canberra Centre is one of the ACT’s busiest public places, and that makes it an ideal location to remind people that Crime Stoppers is a safe and anonymous way to share what they have seen or heard,” Mr Forrester said.
“There is a moment when someone notices something that does not feel right and has to decide what to do next. We want them to think of Crime Stoppers. We do not need proof, we do not need the whole story and we do not want people to put themselves at risk. Anyone can simply share what they know or suspect without saying who they are.”
Mr Forrester said anonymity remains a critical factor in encouraging people to speak up.
“Around 70 per cent of contacts to Crime Stoppers are anonymous, and research shows that up to 30 per cent of people would not have shared information without that option. For many, anonymity is what gives them the confidence to act.”
The Canberra Centre pop-up will run on Tuesday 22 September, with Crime Stoppers ACT representatives available to speak with shoppers, answer questions and provide information about how Crime Stoppers works.
The national campaign is running from 8 September to 10 October 2026, with additional in-centre activations planned across Australia.
